Creating a new document in Photoshop

You can make your Photoshop document whatever size you want. I recommend these settings:

Height: 4000px, Width: 4000px (px is pixels)

Resolution: 300dpi or ppi (dpi is dots per inch and ppi is pixels per inch)

The above settings are still very high quality/resolution. If you make your document as large as mine (41in x 41in), you will have slow processing and saving times, but the choice is yours.

  1. Open Photoshop by going to your Applications folder or to the Launchpad - look for the PS blue icon.
  2. Once Photoshop has opened, go to File, New to create a new document. A pop-up box will appear and prompt you to select settings for your new document.
  3. Name your document 'Snow White'.
  4. Select Custom for the Document Type and change both the height and width.
  5. Do not worry about changing the other advanced settings. If you wish, you can save these measurements as a preset.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Once your blank document has opened, make sure to save it by going to File, Save As.
  8. Remember to save your work periodically throughout this course by going to File, Save or by using Cmd S (Mac) or Ctrl S (Windows).
